Something unusual that happened today

25 January 2011

Tuesday is one of the toughest days I have other than Thursdays, the reason is because I have lessons until 4pm and I still have to go for my cca at macritchie reservoir! Anyway, back to point. It was a very unusual day today. Like normal Tuesdays, I had 3 periods of home economics lesson. Like normal Tuesdays, my partner and I had to make a dish for my teacher to grade. Like normal days, we scored around 14 upon 15marks for my dish. So you might be asking yourself what was so unusual today? Me and my partner screwed up our cooking for the first time. "Didn't you score 14 upon 15marks for your dish?" some of you might ask. Yes, i did score 14 upon 15marks and that is the unusual thing.

We were supposed to make peanut butter cookies. Our home economics teacher, Ms Chan, explained to us clearly the methods and the ingredients to use for making our cookies. My partner and I both listened to the instructions carefully and we made sure we knew the steps before we started making the cookies.

Firstly, I took 4 heaped tablespoons of flour and sift it. After that, I took an egg, broke it, and started to beat the egg. At the same time, my partner went to take a block of butter, 2 heaped tablespoons of sugar and started to mix it with an electric mixer. Next, we added the egg some peanut butter to the mixture inside the electric mixer and took turns to mix it until the ingredients were well combined. Then, I added the flour, bit by bit into the mixture as my partner mixed the mixture. After adding all the flour and after the flour has been mixed well, my partner added a teaspoon of vanilla essence as i stired the mixture. My partner then went to take 2 baking trays and greased it with oil. When the mixture has been fully mixed, my partner used two teaspoons, scooped the mixture, shaped them into many tiny balls and lay them on the baking trays. I flattened them using a fork. Lastly, we put them in the oven and waited for fifteen minutes.

During those fifteen minutes, I went to talk to my other friends who have finished making their cookies. After fifteen minutes, my partner and I went to take the baking tray out of the oven and I realised that cookies on one of the tray were burned and the cookies on the other tray were half burned. I was astonished and i immediately went to tell my teacher. As soon as my teacher saw the cookies, she asked us why we did not check on them during those fifteen minutes and I kept quiet as I had nothing to say.

So how did we get the 14 marks upon 15? My teacher was kind enough. She took the half burned cookie and ate part of it. She said that it tasted good, and it would have tasted better if it was not burned. I was shocked as I did not expect her to taste the cookies and I expected her to give me something like a 5 marks upon 15. It was quiet weird as it was the first time I had burned something in the oven. My friends all kept staring at my cookies and they had a surprised look on their faces. Overall, I am glad that i had 14 upon 15 marks.

Next time, I'll remember to check on my food and not leave it alone.
